Too Long Toy Story

I love toys. Seriously, I do. Whenever I'm in Target, I have to check out the newest stuff. I even worked it into my job that I get to write about toys. I love the creative energy with which they're devised, I'm interested in the way they're marketed and intertwined with movies and TV shows so that you can't tell whether the toy or the character came first. I love the synergy of brands and icons, as in the aforementioned Barbie "Tickle Me Elmo" edition. And I love to play.

Within the toy kingdom, I think LEGOS are fabulous. They inspire creativity and encourage the development of spatial skills and I am absolutely terrible at building with LEGOS. I've never made anything other than a stack of LEGOS, which is probably why I'm amazed when an 8-year-old picks up a LEGO kit and an hour later has planned and built his parents a vacation home with eat-in kitchen and private ski lift.

But one LEGO item that kind of freaks me out is this LEGO CITY Airport fire truck.

I mean, I can understand kids playing with regular toy fire trucks. Fire trucks routinely put out fires and rescue home dwellers from impending doom. But when there's a fire on an airplane? Eh, the results are often. . . not so nice. . . not so conducive to survival. I can only imagine a bunch of charred and melted LEGO men being identified via the LEGO CSI DNA TESTING set. . . which, to my knowledge, does not exist. Yet.

greetings from michele... i gotta admit, half the reason we have kids is to play with their toys!

The fire's still on the runway during takeoff?

I'm still a fan of Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs. My brother and I had more fun with those than any other toy we ever had. Except for maybe my "Little Red Spinning Wheel," which does not encourage group play.

I loved Legos as a kid but I doubt I'd have the patience for them now that I'm an adult. Of course if I see someone else playing with them.... LOL

Michele sent me over to look over your shoulder, Carli, and watch you play.

Hi, Carli, I finally got back here, via Michele. Blogger wouldn't let me post a comment before.

I love Legos; my grandchildren have been playing with them for 12 years and they make some amazing buildings, etc. We love Elmo too, but Grover is my favorite!

I loved Legos so much as a kid.

I see where you're going, but I also remember having a Matchbox airport firetruck. I guess it's just a little bit different today than it was 25 years ago.
