Why I Walk for Lupus--a Shameless Solicitation

On Saturday, October 28, I'm going to get up at the crack of dawn and make my way to South Street Seaport in downtown Manhattan for the Walk With Us to Cure Lupus Walk. Why? I'm not totally sure.

Maybe it's because I know that lupus is a rotten disease that gets little to no attention in the media. (You can learn more about lupus here.) Maybe it's because women make up 90% of all lupus sufferers. Maybe it's because there is no famous person that we know of has lupus, and if they do, they're not standing on a podium and asking for money to find new treatments. It's not a disease that can be easily described in a one-minute commercial, so not many people are aware of it. Maybe it's because I love getting free t-shirts.

Last year, I don't think anyone even knew there was a walk going on; the turnout was pitifully small. As victims of lupus and their families--and one enthusiastic fraternity--strolled through the drizzling rain that morning, I don't think anyone who saw us had any idea that we were even a group.

So please, click here to donate to my effort. (To donate online, click on the grey "support carli " bar above my name and thermometer.) You'll be contributing to finding more successful treatments for a nasty bugger of a disease. And I really do want that t-shirt.

How great that you're doing this. My best friend just found out that her mom has lupus...I will definately pass along the info, as I'm sure she will want to get involved in some way.

I've known a number of women with Lupus. There's quite a range of severity with that, as is the case with many of the autoimmune disorders. It's great that you're raising money for Lupus sufferers. Good luck with that t-shirt. I used to run a lot of 5k and 10k races for the same reason.

Michele sent me.
