Today I watched:
The last 3/4 of The Goodbye Girl
Sleeper
Little Miss Sunshine
and
tom thumb
I liked them all, as Woody Allen is my current favorite, Neil Simon (Goodbye Girl) and Russ Tamblyn (tom thumb) are somewhat persistent favorites, and Little Miss Sunshine was less of a pointless quirky character study than I assumed it would be.
This brings my tally for the year to 9. And my social life to 0.
If you have Turner Classic Movies, I recommend setting your TIVOS, or, if you're still living in the stone age, your VCR, to record Ace in the Hole on January 24 at 2:30 a.m. (It may also be called The Big Carnival.) Ace is a lost Billy Wilder treasure from 1951, and tells the story of a washed-up reporter who manipulates a story in order to regain his former glory. Today, this kind of manipulation is not so much news as it is FOX NEWS, but the movie is worth a peek anyway--especially since it's not available on any form of home video. (I saw it at the Film Forum last summer during the Billy Wilder festival.) Fans of Wilder will get a kick out of the tourist who works for Pacific All Risk Insurance Company--the same company Walter Neff worked for in Double Indemnity.

When I was 17/18, I worked in an AMC six theater located in a mall in the SF Bay Area. I saw a lot of movies during that time period (I remember the lines from "The Empire Strikes Back"), Goodbye Girl, if memory serves, was released around 1980 and played in my theater. I wasn't supposed to like it (teenage boys aren't supposed to like romantic comedies) but I did.
I think Michele did as well,
Mike
Hi from Michele.
I have to admit that I've never been a Woody Allen fan. I didn't enjoy his movies before all the wierd falling in love with his adopted daughter stuff started and that whole thing just ruined it for me.
So i've never seen these movies.
sorry :-(
I like most of Woody Allen's middle stuff but the earlier more slap-sticky movies such as Bananas and Sleeper don't appeal to me very much, Carli. Annie Hall makes my short list of best movies ever though Hanna and her Sisters was in many ways a better movie. Annie Hall speaks to me more tho.
I really liked Goodbye Girl but I've not seen it in decades so I don't know if that'd still be true. I remember Dreyfuss as being really good--and that was about when his problems caught up with him and he disappeared from acting for a while.
Michele sent me over, Carli. Have a nice Sunday.
I haven't seen "Tom Thumb" since I was a kid, but i love all three of the other films you watched.
"The Goodbye Girl" is one of my all-time favorites: "And I don't... like...the panties...hanging...on... the ...rod!"

I've not seen those films though my brother has urged me to see 'Little Miss Sunshine' stating that it isn't the pointless character study I thought it would be! :-)
I live in the UK so we don't have TIVO and as I don't have satelite TV I have a DVD RW so not too bad!
Michele sent me to say hi.
Hi Carli, thanks for visiting my blog.
Castles are sooo cool :-) we are really lucky to have so many in the UK adn I intend to visit more when the weather permits!
If you subscribe to Sky satelite TV then you get something that sounds like TIVO but I don't watch enough TV to justify the expense.
I recently saw Little Miss Sunshine and just loved it. One of my favorites. I notice you got to see DreamGirls. I can't wait until that one hits our theatre. I took my little nephews and niece to see "Happy Never After" yesterday...that one is a dud. Not worth paying for.
I once saw 'One flew over the Cuckoo's nest' and 'The man who came down to earth' in one afternoon and felt really dacadent but you take the biscuit:)

Hope the kitty is doing much better now.
Frankly, I have had my fill of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN as well.... I hate to even use the word "news" with them.... they all manipulate the truth to say what they want.... all of the above mentioned are far to the left... with only one station towards the right.
Good thought for your kitty....
