Miracle Man?

In the wake of the recent Walter Reed hospital scandal, I wonder how Bob Woodruff's recovery to 90% of his former glory can be considered a "miracle." Certainly similar miracles are possible if we afford our returning soldiers the same medical treatment offered to injured war correspondents.

If you're not fully aware of the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a pool table in your community, well, you've got trouble my friends. Trouble right here in River City., reached at Walter Reed, please read this article. We're talking about soldiers, freshly released from the hospital, struggling to find their rehabilitation assignments--then languishing for weeks in roach-infested hellholes while waiting for follow-up treatment. This is the thanks they get for putting their lives on the line? This is what they survived an improvised explosive device attack for--to come home to be buried alive in bureaucratic red tape?

It goes without saying that the government must do better--and cost is not an excuse. For every brain-injured soldier, every soldier suffering from PTSD, every soldier who spends two years away from their family awaiting their fate--time is of the essence. Their treatment will only become more difficult and more expensive as the months lapse. It's almost as if Walter Reed--and other facilities like it--have become factories for churning out this generation's homeless vets. And I wasn't aware that was something every generation needed.

EDIT: I'm aware that Walter Reed hospital has and continues to provide top-notch medical care. I am referring to the conditions experienced by outpatient (and some inpatient) soldiers as exposed by the well-researched articles in the Washington Post. And I have ALWAYS supported the soldiers who bravely put themselves in harm's way.

One as a 10 yr Army wife who's husband will be going to Iraq for the 3rd time, having people jump all of a sudden on our band wagon of support is well, not exactly support.

Our Vets are not going out into the world Homeless, so do NOT start speaking like you're an EXPERT all of a sudden because you read one article that has effected some of our Vets. As someone who's had more than our fair share of friends treated at Walter Reed and other Military hospitals and who's daughter was treated for cancer there, it IS a top notch hospital with TOP NOTCH medical staff who DO care about their patients.

What has happened in Building 18 is horrible, there is no doubt. DO NOT put the whole Walter Reed ARMY Medical Hospital down though. Don't do it. When you've walked a single day in OUR Shoes then you get a say, until then yours is a naive opinion that has no baring and probably could have cared very little to what was happening with our injured soldiers until the WP all of a sudden got the story.

As to the previous poster, all I can say is MORON. Bush can not have control over every little thing. Amazing how Democrats went in and did these tours, saw what was going on over the last MANY months, but yet they sure weren't running to the news outlets about this particular story. No instead they go back to their comfy offices, make a couple calls, ask "what's being done" and drop it, forget about the soldiers and go on with their oblivious lives.

Simply put, most did not care or even think twice about our soldiers at Walter Reed or any other Military Medical Hospital until it becomes news worthy. Nothing like jumping on the good ol' band wagon. @@

Superb post. George awol Bush is in Latin America giving away more of our millions, or is it billions, while this kind of crap is going on in our own country. This is criminal and immoral.

Christy, you have a lot of anger. You really need to take it out where it will do the most good, and it is not by attacking this blogger. My husband is a survivor of the Viet Nam War, albeit with a lot of problems because of it, and honey, you don't yet know what problems you will be facing down the line thanks to what is happening now on all fronts. Rant all you want, but rant in the right direction.

Thank you for your comment, Christy. I'm sorry you think I'm jumping on a bandwagon. I've always supported the troops in Iraq, have and understand that troops receive top-notch medical care when they initially enter Walter Reed. My concern is for what happens after that initial, critical care. You wouldn't spend thousands of dollars restoring a classic car and then leave it out in the rain--and that's exactly what seems to be happening at Walter Reed. (And I read more than one article.) And I think the Washington Post did a thorough expose--and apparently, so does the government, as they have jumped into action to rectify the situation.

Christy does seem to like going off half-cocked.

I've been to WRAMC and it wasn't that bad. There are bases that are a Hell of a lot worse...
