What Should I Do Tomorrow: Choose My Own Adventure

In the attempt to get out more, I've decided to do something tomorrow OTHER than going to the movies, even if it is freezing out.

I was going to put together an extensive list of choices ripped from the pages of Time Out New York, but I ran out of time, and so the choices are somewhat more generic than I'd like.

Please choose for me--choose by number-- and without exception, when I wake up in the morning, whichever choice has the most votes--that's what I'll do.

1. Trek up to a favorite thrift shop (a wonderful 45-minutish walk to and from, including riding in a giant outdoor elevator) to replenish my supply of cheap t-shirts.

2. Go to some sort of museum. A cheap museum.

3. Go to an outer borough, no matter which one, to do something (zoo, museum, wander around, etc). I have not been to an outer borough (Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx) since August 2006, when I went to the Bronx Zoo (also chosen by vote, by my friend Sam). Keep in mind that I'm from here and generally know what's out there, so I don't really need hints on what to DO in the outer boroughs.

4. Open TIME OUT NEW YORK to a random page, and do something listed on that page. Best 2 out of 3 if I really hate the first thing I pick.

5. Get on a train, any train, to another town in New Jersey. Get out and walk around all day.

It's up to you, folks!
And please, feel free to forward this to total strangers who couldn't care less what I do (because I know you are all waiting with baited breath, whatever that means, to see the outcome of this poll)! I want lots of votes! And candy! Lots and lots of candy.

The polar bears in Central Park should be having a grand time in this weather. There's a great cafe down on Bleeker, too...

Then there's the aquarium in brooklyn that fits #2 & #3.

I like the borough idea. Some thoughts:

Brooklyn: Try a slice at that place that TimeOut always ranks as best pizza. I think it's called DiFara's or DiFaro's. It might be in some out of the way nabe like Midwood, but that's part of the adventure. Or you could roam around Williamsburg to see what all the hype is about. If you happen to be in Park Slope, check out BarBQ. It's on the fringes -- 6th Avneue and 20th. Kind of a hole in the wall but it has some of the best BBQ I've had. And I was in there once on a Saturday at 4 pm and the owner/bartender was playing the original King Kong and seemed very knowledgeable about film.

Bronx: I made the mistake of going to Arthur Avenue on a Sunday when most things were closed, but I still had a great time exploring. I saw a convertible full of Franciscan monks. One of them had a box of cannoli.

Queens: Go check out that museum of the moving image (or whatever it's called) and then get a beer or a sausage at the Bohemian Hall Beer Garden. Or go roam around Jackson Heights and find the best samosas.

Can't wait to hear how it all goes. T-Mo

Didn't some work friend of your invite you to a brewery tour? That would be #3.

I think #4 sounds like fun, or maybe #5, ah, it's been so long since I had a free day to just do whatever I wanted- (without thinking or worrying about what the kids want & need to do) they all sound good to me.
Enjoy your weekend though, whatever you do!

I say #5 based on a conversation we had recently where you talked about how there are so many places in Jersey you've never heard of/been to.

Enjoy whatever you do.

Just adding some "write-in" (e-mail) votes:

Dad says #2
Audge says #1
My sister is too afraid to vote for fear she'll be a tiebreaker and choose something I don't really want to do.

I vote for going to Brooklyn because it's a cool borough. I know you don't need ideas about what to do, but since you like film, I'll mention that at 1 p.m. tomorrow at 1 pm at the Central Library and Brooklyn, they are showing a series of silent shorts.

OK. I'm only choosing #2 because art history was my major in college.
I know what you're thinking: "Art history?! WHY???" My answer: No oral reports. And you get to sit in a nice, dark room looking at slides for a couple of hours.

BTW: Good luck finding a cheap museum in NYC. I'm sure they're out there, but ever since graduation I tend to shun most cultural institutions, so I wouldn't know.

#2: The Freakatorium on Clinton St. although there is a $5 donation involved.

If you do #1 please avoid the beer stained T's.

Hi Carli,
No, B didn't work on Robinsons. They tend to work on every other one, since it takes so long for them to come out. :) I loved the color and visuals in Robinsons. But keep watching... now that Disney is getting the hang of 3D, the quality is going to soar. :)

I vote for #3, Carli; more specifically The Bronx Zoo. And if you really have a yankering for candy, I have over 60 pounds of it here. Xmas clearances are so much fun!

Hi, Carli. Michele sent me to vote for retail therapy at the thrift shop. Sounds like fun :)

I have to add, your post makes me miss living in a walking city, rather than the suburbs.

It also reminds me of my cousins who refuse to admit that life exists above 14th street.

Here from Michele.
I vote for #1. I love going to thrift stores, even if it is just to browse.
Alternately #4.

#4, Carli! That's it....! At least you have a tiny bit of recourse with this one....
GOOD LUCK! And let us know what you finally ended up doing!

Brooklyn, Carli. Go back to your roots!!! ;o)

Ahhhh maaaan, I'm a day late! Oh well, I'm voting anyway!

I vote #4 just because of the fun of "randomness". That is one of the things I love about riding a motorcycle in areas I've never been in....you just don't know what you'll experience.

I voted for the boroughs but Carli cut my comment. Are we not allowed to talk bad about Staten Island?

Jack Silbert said...

We can say whatever we want till she gets back! Staten Island is a big trash heap! Nyah nyah n-nyah nyah!!!!

Carli N. Wendell said...

I have no idea what Suzy Q. is talking about. I didn't delete her comment. And I considered going to Staten Island!

I missed voting, but I still want to know what you did.
