A Nest For Birds, There Ain't No Words. . .

Next Thursday, at 7 p.m., I go under the scissors.

I am getting a haircut for the first time in a year. Maybe more than a year.

I'm thinking of doing something different. For the last several years I've had a mop of uncontrolled curly hair. It's pretty long right now--beyond shoulder length AND beyond Thunderdome. It's out of control, my boss sometimes calls me "Moppy," dogs try to eat it, I have to use about half a bottle of conditioner every time I wash it, and it's just time to have less hair.

But when it's shortish, it tends to puff out, which is why Ken Molina called me "broccoli head," among other things, in high school. And I don't like it really short, because then people can see my face, and that is not good for anyone. And also, my mother will tell me you can't be fat and have short hair at the same time. It's some rule inscribed on our family menorah thousands of years ago when we lived in caves and made soup with woolly mammoth because chickens hadn't been invented yet.

So I'm thinking something between chin length and shoulder length. I know many of you don't know what I look like, but from what I've described, any brilliant ideas?

How about having your stylist decide? T and I use the same guy - let me know if you want to try him. AP

Aside from length, can you have tour hair thinned as well? I've got thick hair, which sucks. Sometimes, after it's been cut, the lady who does my hair will go through it again with a special pair of thinning scissors. I can feel my head get lighter at that point.

Man, how I wish I could just go bald now. My luck, the men in my family keep their hair forever. That sucks.

Dear Carli,

You've asked my opinion on a hair style for you. This begs the question...have you SEEN the pic of me on Sarch's blog?! It's kinda like asking Jim Carrey for hints on how to be subtle.

I'm thinking layers = lots of long layers. And definitely thinning it out - they do it to my hair which is nowhere near as thick as yours...

I agree with the thinning/layers. My Mom has hair a lot like yours - long, thick, curly. She gets it thinned into layers and it definitely helps with the "puffing out."
