We are discussing whether I should see Next to Normal, a musical about a woman with bipolar disorder.
Shephard: The musical paints a picture of real people who go through these things; I can only imagine any stage production that depicts such emotional issues will bring up a lot for audiences. I suppose that's the definition of good theatre... it evokes strong responses and reactions.
Me: That's true, but sometimes I just want to see people really excited about living in Oklahoma.
Shephard: I hear you. A little happy ever after is always nice.

You know how I feel about Next to Normal. I say this based on the off-Broadway version, but it certainly did not paint a picture of real people dealing with bipolar disorder.
