So last night was the AFI's 100 Years, 100 Cheers show. These shows have been on for the past several years, and the themes are starting to get a little weird. The point has always been, it seems, to get people to rent or buy these movies. But if it exposes the country to something that isn't Jeepers Creepers 9 or whatever it is folks are renting these days, that's a good thing.
I am trying not to dwell on movies that should have been on the list, like Independence Day, and movies that should have been even higher on the list than they were, like Norma Rae (hey, I'm rhyming!). Knowing that this is all a big advertisement, it's just not that important to me.
Tonight when I went to sleep, it was The Apartment again. I can't help it. Even when it's a movie that people tell me isn't meant to be watched again and again (Anyone remember my Shattered Glass/Love Actually phase?) I take comfort in watching certain movies over and over again. Maybe it's the Rain Man in me.
Rain Man was on the 100 Years, 100 Cheers list, and I think that was a bit of a stretch--although the theme is so vague, just about any movie with a sweeping, inspirational soundtrack could have made it. Talk about hey now! Hey now! Hey now! Hey now! Iko Iko!
I'm hoping that next year, they'll do "100 Years. . . 100 Spit Takes," or something fun like that.
