BENSON

I was watching the BENSON marathon last weekend, and yes, I was mighty upset that they didn't show the famous "Didi Conn gives birth in an elevator" episode. (Okay, famous amongst fans of BENSON.)

Why do pregnant women ever get on elevators on TV shows? There's definitely some sort of electro-magnetic negative energy surrounding pregnant sitcom characters, because they're always getting stuck on elevators right when they're about to go into labor. (Well, that, or just a massive lack of creativity amongst TV writers.)
And when the elevator door opens, there's the baby, miraculously born sans umbilical cord, and everyone's feet are clean and free of amniotic debris.

Anyway, BENSON, as you may know, was a spinoff of the series SOAP, co-starring Katherine Helmond, who went on to play the geriatric slut Monica on WHO'S THE BOSS. On one of the episodes I watched, she guest-starred as her SOAP character, and when she walked into the room, the audience "famous character entrance applause" was out of control. It was bigger than Fonzie or Kramer applause. And Katherine Helmond just stood there for like 3 minutes, smiling a little, "I'm so famous, I'm just going to stand here and bask in the applause wrought by my presence on a show spunoff from a show I was on 5 years ago." And I'm like, "Give me a break, people, it's KATHERINE HELMOND. She's not that famous. Why are you so freaking happy to see her?" But then I realized that they couldn't hear me, because I was at home and they were in a studio audience in California, and also, it was taped more than 20 years ago.

And speaking of Who's the Boss, there was a Jeopardy! category the other day called "Hold Me Closer, Tony Danza." And that's just funny.
