A Few Questions Answered

An anonymous poster asked the following questions:
I would like to know just how many movies you actually own?

Not as many as you'd think. DVD-wise, we're talking less than 30, probably, and half of those were gifts. A lot of the movies you see me talking about on here, I've DVR'd from TV.

Are any of them recent?

I have DVDs from two of last year's movies: King Kong and Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith: The one with all the colons. Granted, one is a remake of a 1933 movie, and one is the final movie in a series that started in 1977.

Do you have movies that you own but have never seen?

Yes, I have a few videos I bought on the super cheap before I realized I didn't care to watch videos anymore, like His Girl Friday and Day of the Triffids. A co-worker of mine was getting rid of all his videos, and I took CASINO. Someday I might watch them, especially if I ever move my VCR to the bedroom. And I've been given some movies by the media editor where I work (like Call Me Madam with Ethel Merman) that I've yet to watch. But most of the time, a movie is out of the shrink wrap the moment I come in the door--which is probably one reason why I can never find my keys.

Do you have movies that you have had to give up or destroy to stop yourself from watching them? Have you ever considered do the latter?

There are movies that I do not own that I should probably never watch again. I should never watch Terms of Endearment, but I'm not sure I could ever "get the sad out" if I didn't. I will not let myself own ET, either, because I can't stop crying during it.
I shouldn't watch CARRIE, either, but I recently bought myself a copy from HALF.com, so that's not going to happen. That is NOT a movie to go to sleep to, though. That is a movie to watch when I need to stay up for three days worrying that someone is going to smother me in Karo corn syrup and red food coloring.

But for the most part, watching the same movie over and over again gives me some sense of comfort, and helps me get to sleep, and I have enough trouble in both those departments. It's something I started doing my freshman year of college. My roommate and I would choose a movie, usually Soapdish, A Few Good Men or Parenthood, to go to sleep to. The next morning, we'd compare notes on when we fell asleep. On a really bad night, I'd watch the whole movie. On a good night, I wouldn't even get passed the opening credits. I do the same thing now. I don't see any difference between this and being lulled to sleep by a favorite song. When I watch The Apartment from the beginning, I hope to be asleep by Christmas. Right now, it's 3:39 in the morning, and 1 hour into Sweet Charity. I'm not at all tired, so I'll probably get through it all.

There is one movie my sister TIVO'd for me and made a DVD of. (Her toys are better than my toys.) After watching it once or twice, I tossed it. I'm embarrassed to say what it was.

I will admit to watching the same movies over and over again when I'm awake, too, but to a lesser extent. And when I watch a crappy TV movie that I've seen before, I admit to feeling like I'm really wasting time . . . although since I've started on this big movie kick, I'm wasting less time with movies I've seen a hundred times.
