A Few Brief Words About Brief Encounter

Tomorrow night, TCM will be showing Brief Encounter (8 p.m. EST). (Insert corny Fruit of the Loom joke here.)

The 1945 film is about two married strangers, played by Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, who meet, fall in love, and have what I'm guessing from the name of the movie is a not-so-long affair.

What excites me most about the film, however, is that at some point, the two main characters have a secret rendezvous at the apartment of one of Trevor Howard's friends. And when director Billy Wilder saw this, he was less interested in the couple having an affair than he was in the schlub who gave up his home so that his friend could "get busy." And from there, Wilder was inspired to create his 1960 masterpiece, The Apartment.
