I've Got Spunk-I Hate Spunk!

Tomorrow is my GULP thirtieth birthday. Mary Richards was 30 when the Mary Tyler Moore Show started. She seemed much older than me. (Maybe that's because Mary Tyler Moore was more like 33 when the show started, but it's probably more to do with my emotional age of about 12.)

I didn't want a big to-do at work. Two years ago, I told Sam and BB I didn't want any hoo-ha. They took it to mean I absolutely wanted hoo-ha and threw me a big thing. About 700 people showed up at my cubicle singing "Happy Birthday," after which I said I was sorry, but I wasn't celebrating. Then Sam-sweet, innocent, Sam--said, "But wait, I think you're really going to like this," and held out a red velvet cake she'd made from scratch as if she were Oliver Twist asking for more porridge. And I said, "I don't care" and walked out. Then I came back after about 45 minutes to get my phone. Then I went home crying. To this day, Sam says it is the cruelest thing I've ever done to her. (I say second cruelest.)

This year, I didn't so much want hoo-ha, because I'm really upset at getting so old. But I wanted SOME attention. I've always loved getting cards with nice messages from people, so I told BB I wanted a card, and anything else he could decide.

Today I received 31 birthday cards. It was awesome. There were cards from people who don't even work at the company anymore. Someone made a card from my cat. It was like the end of Miracle on 34th STreet when they bring in all the mail for Santa Clause, proving he's not crazy. Well, I'm still crazy, but at least I had all those cards. It'll make the birthday a little easier to swallow. Love IS all around--no need to waste it!

Carli, Happy Birthday and thanks for the visit to my blog. I wish I were going to be 30 again...LOL. My daughter turns 35 in 2 weeks and I turn 66 at the end of the month! Should I admit that? Anyway, life really does begin at 40, so you have 10 more years to wait!

That was a great post. I understand what you mean about getting older. It is scary, but at the same time so rewarding.

Thanks so much for stopping by to say hi!

Heh, at first I thought you said it was your thirteenth birthday, so you don't have to be 30 :)

Have a great birthday. And you know what they say, 30 is the new 20.

"someone made a card from my cat"

would you like to rephrase that so the PETA people don't get upset with you?
