Glad for Ziploc

Now, I'm not one of those bloggers who gets paid to test and promote the latest allergy medication or MP3 player or even a stinking sample of fabric softener. I mean, what does it take to get this stuff, people?
Anyway, believe me when I tell you that I'm not pushing the new Ziploc Zip 'N Steam Bags and Glad Simply Cooking Microwave Steam Bags because I'm being paid by the people at either of these fine companies. I'm telling you about them because
A) They rock my world
and
B) I want Glad and Ziploc to find this blog post while their Google Monkey interns scour the web for mentions of their products, and then leave a lifetime supply of microwave-safe plastic steaming bags at my front door.

In the interest of the latter, I will now type the words "Glad" and "Ziploc" numerous times.

Now, back to the bags themselves. With a few minor design variations, both the Glad and Ziploc steaming bags allow you to steam foods with no mess, no fuss, and not a lot of fat. I've been steaming chicken, carrots, salmon, and mini potatoes. Cooking times vary by and are listed on each bag. Each bag's respective Web site features interesting recipes and cooking tips. Glad even has a recipe for an omelet, which I've tried a few times with varying success. Glad's site also features a hilarious interactive feature: you type in a food, and an enthusiastic actor with mad microwaving skills will show you the ins and outs of microwave steaming.

Okay, so they're not exactly environmentally friendly, and they CLAIM they won't give me some horrible plastic-ingesting disease years down the line. That claim is good enough for me.

I'm not making gourmet food, but I am making food that is healthier than what I had been eating, and I don't wind up with a ton of dishes or a Teflon-drenched George Foreman grill to to wash afterwards. Tonight I had steamed chicken breast and steamed dill carrots. Very healthy, very easy. Microwave cooking? It's in the bag!

(See, Glad and Ziploc? I'm CLEVER. See that last line? Poetry. You should totally have me on staff.)

First of all, Michele sent me today...
Second: I only use glass or corning wear in the Microwave...NO PLASTIC AT ALL. I know whjat THEY say...but I also know we have been led down many "iy's perfectly safe" roads in the past that turned out to be horrificly dangerous and disasterous results...So, theough I want to eat 'healthy', I prefer cookng in the old fashioned manner on the stuff---NO ALUMINUM either...And use the Microwave only for heating.
Just my own opinion based on much reading and research.

I hope both Glad and Ziplock find you and send you lots of free stuff!

I think I've lost it! Cooking of the stove...OY!

Good point, OOLOTH. But I think I'll take my chances with the bags over some nasty Teflon coating.
I'll probably get hit by a truck tomorrow anyway. :)

Remember the movie Mrs. Robinson when someone whispered "plastic" to young Benjamin? Now it is everywhere, including the landfill for a very very long time. I think it's a major problem, but the words "glad ziploc" look nice together. Michele sent me.

I remember the movie The Graduate, unless it was called something else somewhere else. And yes, plastic is bad for landfills, it's going to be there for 5 million years, but I do what I can do. I take mass transit. I don't fly or smoke or use lead paint. So I'm okay with it.

Hi Carli, Michele sent me to visit you.

I don't really do much cooking in the mic, other than popcorn or veggies. But I just steam them in a pyrex...are the bags really better?

Carli I find this post to be another example of your clever genius...you will soon be rolling in piles of the things. If Glad doesn't shower you with heaping truckloads of these steamer bags there is simply no justice in this world!

if I said you were a bit nutty, would you understand that I mean it as a term of endearment?

Hey...you tried those new Glad Bags lately? What do you think of 'em? ;)
(no, seriously, now you have me wanting to try them!)

Mmmm... dill carrots

I use the regular ziploc bags (left opened) to steam sugar snap peas and the like. I never had a problem with the plastic melting or anything.

And if you think about it, you don't have to use all that water, energy to heat it, and soap to clean pans and Foreman Grills, so it's somewhat environmental, right? :)

I'm waiting to see if you develop any (more) tics ;-)

Really??? And it TASTES ok? I've got a mental block against microwaved meat. It just freaks me out and tastes gross to me. Dunno why.

Carli N. Wendell said...

The taste varies depending on what you're making. I made dill carrots, and they were very, very good. The omelet is an acquired taste. Steamed chicken tastes just like steamed chicken--not wonderful, but great for someone watching their weight.
Maybe I just have low standards. I mean, I'll put just about anything down my gullet. I guess as a bachelorette who gets home at around 8 at night, it's more important to me that food be quick and clean than super-tasty. But I do like the food I've been making (and so does the cat), and plan to try some of the more complicated recipes.
