Yet Another Wendell Post

Wendell is home. He came through the procedure well, but he lost all 3 of his remaining canine teeth (fangs). When he was a kitten, I was told he had bad gums, and they've finally caught up with him. The vet said it wasn't my fault--something was clearly just wacky with his mouth, and his other teeth are in good shape. So that was good to know. And even though I didn't request it, they saved the teeth. . . which is good, because for some creepy reason my friend Suzy Q. wants them. (I think she might be building a cat.)

The bill was for much less than I thought, since everything went well (fingers crossed that it stays that way). I have a freelance check coming in a few weeks, and it should cover most of the bill.

Thank you so much for the outpouring of good vibes for my little guy, and thanks to Max for writing an entire post all about Wendell. And a special thank you to those who offered to send a few bucks my way to pay for the surgery. (I politely decline; there are kitties who need it far more than mine.) Your generosity demonstrated how special the community of "kitty bloggers" really is.

I just read Max's post. It seems I'm too late for good wishes for the surgery, so I'll send some for the recovery period.

To share a couple of related stories: My cat lost one of his canines fairly late in his life. It didn't seem to bother him much after the first few days; he just sort of worked around it, and ended up living another couple of years (he died of renal failure at about age 18). Also, I recently had neighbors (in the apartment next door) who had a cat with *no* teeth - she'd had them all removed due to gum disease a long time before, when she was fairly young. I asked if they had to give her special food, like pureed stuff. They said No, actually she ate dry food - swallowed the pieces whole. I guess if a cat really wants to eat they'll find a way to do it.

Good luck to you and Wendell.

I am glad that the surgery went well and I hope he isn't in too much pain. I'm sorry that he had to lose all of the rest of his canines, though. My best wishes for a speedy recovery for him.

I wonder if he'll meow with a lisp now... ;)

I know a couple of toothless cats. They look funny when they yawn, but other than that they don't seem to care and no one else notices. I think they're just happy because they get nothing but Stinky Goodness to eat :)

I'm happy for you that Wendell is fine, Carli. Maybe you can tell some dead cat jokes now that he's safe.

Happy purrs that Wendell came thru everything OK. Does he get lotsa extra stinky goodness for foods cause of his teeths? That is a upside for him!

I'm very happy to hear he is OK.
