Yes, there were assistant editors before Sam, and after Sam, but Sam is the benchmark. Her replacement lasted less than a year, and now we have a new one, whom I'll call Robin, mostly because I kept thinking her name was Robin.
And today, I started singing the Laverne and Shirley theme song to myself. . . and I said this to her:
Sorry. Some people break out into hives. I break out into theme songs. . . and also, sometimes, hives.
