I'm Sorry, But This is Fucked Up

Two high school Seniors in Scranton, Pennsylvania, were suspended from school for a day because they skipped gym class to meet Barack Obama. Additionally, one of the students is the class president, and has been asked to resign. The school board says the rules are very clear, and had they approached a teacher for permission, perhaps they could have avoided punishment.

What I see is two students interested enough about the world around them that when they heard of an impromptu stop by a prospective U.S. president, their first instinct was to dash to the diner where Obama's motorcade was stopped for what undoubtedly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They weren't smoking pot or waiting for concert tickets (although, I'd argue that waiting for really special concert tickets is worth skipping school for, too). The school district sent a strange and direct message to its students today: learn about the world through books and lectures, but don't dare try to experience it for yourselves on school time--even if you are a high school Senior, and the only class you're missing is gym.

That IS bullshit! They got more out of hearing Obama than they ever would out of gym class.

That's ridiculous- as a mother of an 18 year old senior in high school- I would much prefer she met Obama than went to gym class.
We're dealing with issue because she scheduled herself a study hall for the last class of the day & is leaving each day before the study hall. Even though she's 18- even though she's a straight A student & even though I've gone in & spoken to the principal & others- they still fuss.
