Another Actual Post About Movies

In honor of the newly late Cyd Charisse (she of the "I have two names that can actually be spelled with an 'S'"), Turner Classic Movies will present a trio of films in which she appears on Friday, June 27.

The first is Singin' in the Rain. Charisse appears in the "Broadway Melody" sequence towards the end of the movie. She is by no means the star, but if you've never seen this, perhaps the greatest MGM musical of all time, try to catch it on Friday.

They're also showing Band Wagon, which I've never seen, and can't really comment on because, well, I haven't seen it, and I know very little about it.

The movie I'm most excited about is Silk Stockings. I've seen the first half hour or so of it, but never got around to watching the rest. The main reasons I'm excited to watch:

1. It is a musical remake of Ninotchka, a very funny Greta Garbo (Garbo laughs!) film penned by my man Billy Wilder, released in 1939.

2. It has a song I absolutely love called "Stereophonic Sound." It's available on iTunes, and it's fabulous. It's all about how moviegoers expect the latest technology, such as VistaVision, Cinerama, Glorious Technicolor, etc. There is no mention of Digital Surround Sound, 'cause it didn't exist.

3. Jules Munshin is also in the film. I wish he had made more movies. I absolutely love ON THE TOWN, and he was a big part of its success.

Speaking of which. . . remember last year when I went to see The Apartment at the Elevated Acre? (For those of you who don't feel like clicking, the elevated acre is this amazing astro-turfed building roof where they show movies during the summer on a giant inflatable screen.) They're playing On the Town on August 5, and I've invited just about everyone I know in the hopes that at least 1 person will wind up joining me. Since I'm a total dork, I'm very excited about the scene where the drive over the Brooklyn Bridge, because you can see the Brooklyn Bridge from the Elevated Acre. Oooooooh. It's like being IN THE MOVIE.

If you live nowhere near New York City, don't despair. You can still catch On the Town on TCM. They show it quite often. It will be on July 4 at 4:05 a.m.

"I gotta get the gargle."

See, if you watch the movie, you'll know what I'm talking about.

And for those of you updating your Netflix Queue, here is a list of films mentioned in this blog post that are "Carli recommended":
Singin' in the Rain
Silk Stockings
On the Town
Ninotchka
Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Yeah, I snuck that last one in. 'Cause seriously, yo, it's dang funny. . . except when they're mean to Gizmo. That makes me sad.

So very sad about Cyd Charisse.....I just hate that all these GREAT Stars are leaving us. And it is more than wonderful that their stellar performances are preserved on film, though, isn't it?

My Birthday is on June 27th so I won;t be able to watch a lot of those films...BUT, I have seen them ALL, many times before!
