Now, it's a PI who has a side job as a creative consultant to a long-running cop show. One of the character's on the show is killed off due to the actor's bad behavior. Since no one else in entertainment will hire him, and since he needs money, the PI hires him to help out with cases. Cases they work would influence what happens on the cop show, and vice versa.
The nerdy fan guy would still be there. So would the ex-wife, but now it's the PI's ex-wife, not the actor's. And there might still be a bad-girl ex-cop who couldn't play by the rules. But I think that might mess up the buddy dynamic, so she might have to be a recurring role. Maybe she changes into a bitchy D.A.
