How Laser Eye Surgery Threatens National Security

Did you know:
The availability of free laser eye surgery to cadets at the US Naval Academy frees up an extra 1/3 of the graduating class to compete for spots as pilots and in other occupations requiring perfect vision? Did you know that cadets who previously would have been relegated to an officership aboard a submarine now have other options, and the Navy is having trouble finding officers to serve aboard submarines? Is this really an issue of national security? Probably not. There is still only so much space in the Aviation program; someone will have to serve on a submarine. But it's another example of how one industry can have a profound and unexpected impact on another aspect of our lives.

It wasn't until recently that I became interested in logistics and marketing and how businesses are so interconnected. I wish I knew more, so I just added Uncommon Carriers to my Amazon wishlist. I came upon this book when looking for more information on a story in The Economist about lobsters. Did you know that more live lobsters are shipped from landlocked Louisville, Kentucky than anywhere else in the country? That's because the main UPS hub is there, and the lobster supplier in Nova Scotia realized it would save them lots of import-related paperwork if the lobsters were all shipped via truck to one convenient location in the US, then dispersed throughout the nation one by one.

And so ends another "post that is only interesting to me."

No, I found it interesting, Carli. It doesn't really make sense to me that something so perishable would be shipped that far away before distribution. The lobsters that come back north are "out of the market" longer than they need to be. Moral: never eat lobster north of the Mason-Dixon line....LOL

Michele sent me!

Thanks for the trivia. My DH and I both enjoy coming up with things the other doesn't know... and he's better at it than I am! So, thanks to your lobster post, I knew something I could share with him!
