I think this is from Gone with the Wind (the book, not the movie), sugar was also in short supply during the Civil War and they used to dehydrate watermelon to get sweetener. I wanted michele to send me, but don't know who she is and where I can find her!
Those are two very interesting facts. I'm sure the new BF will be surprised when I mention the little tidbit during football season.
