Watching Movies, Old-School, Not Watching The Movie Old School

I watched two underwheming movies today: Play Misty For Me, which I feel I would have liked a lot more had AMC not chopped it to bits and added in 4 dozen commercial breaks, and had Clint Eastwood not used what looks like tomato soup as blood. I also watched His Girl Friday, which was good enough for a regular movie but not up to par for Howard Hawks.

Tonight, I'll be watching Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, which I understand was originally titled Alice Moved Out And Got a Rotten Deal on a Fourth-Story Walkup in an Up-And-Coming-Neighborhood And Had to Pay a 15% Broker's Fee. I'm excited about watching for several reasons:
  1. I forgot to DVR it when it was on a few months ago, and I understand it's really good.
  2. It will allow me to add to my Martin Scorsese list.
  3. I remember watching the sitcom starring Linda Lavin, who, for the record, my mother hates. Like, really, really hates. If my mother was in a room full of celebrities and terrorists, and the terrorists handed her a pistol and said that if she didn't shoot one of the celebrities, everyone would die, my mother would have no qualms about shooting Linda Lavin. Anyway, Alice had a really awesome theme song. I can sing both versions, if you'd like.
  4. The MAIN reason I am excited is because the movie is being shown on PBS. Every Saturday night, my local PBS station, in a sponsorship deal with Syms, (where an educated consumer is their best customer) treats viewers to one or two classic films. It's a cheap, uncomplicated process. No cable. No DVR, DVD, VHS, TCM, pay-per-view, etc. They show a movie. If you want to watch a movie, you turn on PBS, and you watch whatever they give you. A little dictatorial, yes, but sometimes it's nice to pretend I'm in the sixties, before there were so many choices. Or, you know, Stalinist Russia.

I saw "Play Misty for Me" on one of the pay stations. While I don't find it particularly scary, I do get a kick out of it. Isn't "Killing Me Softly" from that movie?

I liked Alice doesn't live here any more pretty well, I think I saw it on TCM or somewhere where they show classics & don't break it all up with commercials, definitley a complete 70's theme peice & not much like the tv show a LOT darker!

Anyway, i use to love watching that show. Mel, kiss my grits!

I think i liked One Day at a Time a lot better since Valerie Bertanelli was hot stuff.

thanks for the flashbacks.

Happy Sunday. I'm here from Michelle's, but I will definitely been checking back.

Speaking of Clint Eastwood movies, my personal favorite was always "The Beguiled" which was released the same year as "Play Misty for Me." Of course, and I'm dating myself here, I fell in love with him when he was Rowdy Yates!!!

OK -- I just wrote a nice long comment here and tried to post it and it disappeared. Now I'm annoyed and will just have to give you the bullet points from my previous comment.
* I watched ADLHA
* Tuned in halfway thru so didn't realize the TV show connection till she walked into the Tucson diner
*The son rocked. Will have to IMDB him to see what happened with his career.
*Jodie Foster rocked.
*Kris Kristofferson is super sexy in a 70s mountain man way.
